  1. Good evening fellow paddlers,

I have a few questions about kayaking the lower Scioto River. I am hoping to plan a short trip (a few days/nights) down the lower part of the river. I contacted the ODNR regarding camping along the river and they informed me that most of the land is private, thus "illegal" to camp.

I have paddled several rivers here in Florida and camped along the banks. Technically the land is private, but so long as you weren't camping in someone's back yard or on their dock nobody much cared. Pretty much like "people on the river are happy to give."

    My questions are..
Is it possible to camp along the river at all?
    Is the riverfront developed?
How serious are land owners and law enforcement about camping, land rights, and trespassing along the river?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This would be the initial planning for my dream paddle down the Scioto to the Ohio to the Mighty Mississippi.

  2. Hello Jeff,

Yes it is possible to camp alone river as there are several sand barges and several places to get out alone the river. Keep in mind that several parts of the river is out in the middle of farm land and almost anyone you stop and ask will give permission to camp or put in. You can kayak any river or stream in Ohio without permission as long as you don't set foot on land once you set foot you have to have permission from land owners. The scioto is a great trip to take on the lower part. Put in just north of Richmond dale oh then on to waverly oh then dump into the Ohio at Portsmouth. I hope this has answered your questions? I hope you enjoy your time here and have fun on your trip!

    Matt,
